Larry Durst is a PhD candidate in American Studies at Rutgers University-Newark. His research interests include critical and cultural theory; the entwined histories of media, technology, advertising, consumerism, corporatism, and popular culture in America; and the ways that Americans’ daily encounters with culture productions, consumer products, mass media, and their local environments affect the formation and reinforcement of American identities, ideologies, and social relations. Larry has spent the past forty years in the media industry as a creative director on many international and national brands at a variety of advertising and marketing agencies. He began his career in media as a “copy boy” in the New York bureau of a global wire service. Larry has taught courses on culture and media at Rutgers-Newark and the practice of advertising at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame of New Jersey in 2018.
