Nick Kline

Faculty member Nick Kline

Kline received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and his BFA from the University of the Arts. He creates photographs, artists publications, installations and socially-engaged art. His engaged projects include being Creative Director of Express Newark, a Center for Socially Engaged Art and Design in Newark, NJ, 2021-Present. He is also the Founder of Shine Portrait Studio, 2017- Present, which reimagines a community portrait studio for our time. Stripes for St. Joseph, an installation using a former Catholic Church in Grand Rapids, MI, was shortlisted by jurors for ArtPrize 2015. Selected solo exhibitions include: R. Jampol Projects, New York, NY (2014); Occurrence Gallery, Montreal, Canada (2014); Prosjektrom Normanns, Stavanger, Norway (2012); Berlinskej Model, Prague, Czech Republic (2014); Open Source Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2012); Uno Art Space, Stuttgart, Germany (2008); and Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY (1999). Selected group exhibitions include: Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2013); Center for Book Arts and Media, Chicago, IL (2013); Minnesota Center for Photography, Minneapolis, MN (2008); and Smack Mellon Studios, Brooklyn, NY (2002). Special Projects include Printed Matter Inc., Window Installation, New York, NY (2014); UNTITLED. Editions, UNTITLED. Art Fair, Miami Beach, FL (2013). Kline’s artist publications are in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard Art Museums, Getty Research Institute, Artexte, and Banff Center. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker, ArtPapers, Hyperallergic, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Time-Out NY, The PhotoReview, Frankfurter Rundschau Magazine, among others. Kline has had artist residencies at Artexte, Montreal, Canada, as well as the Center for Contemporary Arts, Prague, Czech Republic.
Professor Kline is the Coordinator/Advisor for the Rutgers Newark Fine Art Program.
