Fayemi Shakur

Fayemi Shakur is a writer, cultural critic, curator and interdisciplinary artist. Her writing has been featured in The NewYork Times, CNN Style, VICEHyperallergic, HYCIDE magazine,
and MFON: Women Photographers in the African Diaspora among other books and publications. This year she was selected as a 2019 Critical Studies Artist in Residence at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, 2019 Feminist in Residence at Project for Empty Space, and Artist in Residence at Shine Portrait Studio.

Professor Shakur is a Visiting Lecturer currently teaching Seminar in Contemporary Art, a writing intensive course and Senior Studio Seminar at Rutgers University-Newark. The courses are designed to teach students to think critically and thoughtfully about contemporary art, art criticism, and how we engage in the world.

Her recently published limited edition, 146-page risoprint artbook, A Womb of Violet: An Anthology, features a collection of contemporary voices in poetry and art by Black women artists who pay homage to the work of Black feminist/womanist thinkers. A Womb of Violet is archived in collections at The Newark Public Library, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Free Black Women’s Library, The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale and The Library of Congress.
